Grimalts advance with forfeit win

13.07.2024 - Vienna

Things got underway early on Saturday with a South-American battle at the Red Bull Beach Arena. Sadly, it ended with a forfeit on the part of Brazil's George Wanderley and Andre Loyola Stein. Chile's Grimalt cousins, Marco and Esteban, move on to the quarterfinals.

It had started so well for the Brazilians. Solid, no-nonsense plays by both sides kept them neck and neck for most of the first set. George/Andre managed to save one set point but then gave it away on the serve. They looked like they might take the second set but impeccable blocking by the Chileans, cheered on by a small but vocal band of Chilean fans, brought them back.

Brazil were now behind 12-13 and the match was called. George was seen attended by the medical team and with an ice pack on his right shoulder. Ahead of the Olympics in Paris in two weeks, forfeiting was an understandable decision.
