Olympic clash in quarterfinal

12.07.2024 - Vienna

It was a high-profile clash between the 2020 Olympic bronze medallists and silver medallists. And it is Switzerland's Vergé-Dépré/Mäder who came out on top Friday night, beating Australia's Mariafe/Clancy 2-1 (23-21, 19-21, 15-9) to book their place in the semi-finals.

A tight first set saw the Australians ahead for much of the time but Vergé-Dépré/Mäder launched a late attack and saved two set points to win it for themselves.

The second set could have also gone either way, with both teams battling it out for each point. In a party atmosphere, with fans belting out songs and dancing in the stands, Mariafe/Clancy managed to hold off the Swiss just long enough to take the set.

The last quarterfinal of the tournament went into a third set and still neither side showed any sign of tiredness even as play approached 11 pm. It was the Swiss, however, who finally managed the breakthrough, taking a well-deserved win.
