Three more Olympic tickets issued after Nations Cup Finals

17.06.2024 - Jurmala, Luque

After the first 18 beach duos per gender had already qualified for the Olympic Games in Paris via the Olympic Ranking and the World Championships, twelve nations were now competing in Latvia for one of the last tickets promised to the podium winners. A women's ticket was also secured in the South American Continental Cup.

Olympic tickets for France and Netherlands

In Jurmala, the two Austrian interim duos Hammarberg/Pristauz and Dressler/Waller suffered a narrow defeat. Although the first part of the final went to red-white-red - in which Hammarberg/Pristauz won 2-1 (28-30, 21-17, 15-11) - both duos were defeated by the French in the second match (1-2: 19-21, 21-19, 12-15) and in the Golden Set (0-1: 10-15). Bassereau/Lyneel and Rotar/Gauthier-Rat were thus able to celebrate another Olympic ticket for home and Olympic host country France. A women's duo is already represented with Placette/Richard.

In the women's competition, the Dutch duos Bröring/van Driel, E. and Piersma B./Bekhuis came out on top. In two final matches, they beat the Czech duos Neuschaeferova/Svozilova (2-1: 19-21, 21-15, 15-11) and Hermannova/Stochlova (2-1: 21-17, 20-22, 15-7). This means that another women's duo will join Stam/Schoon and the men's teams Boermans/de Groot and Immers/van de Velde at the Olympic Games. The Netherlands will therefore send the maximum number of beach teams to Paris, two per gender.

Historic victory for Paraguay

The women's final of the South American Continental Cup also took place over the weekend. On home turf at Los Pynandi Stadium in Luque, Paraguay, Erika/Fio and Michelle/Poletti proved their mettle. They beat the Argentinian finalists Gallay/Churin and Peralta/Ghigliazza through heavy rain and even heavier cheering from the home crowd. This victory is historic for the South Americans, as it is the first time that Paraguay will be sending a beach volleyball duo to the Summer Olympics; Argentina has already been represented five times.
